Robots can build IKEA chairs now! - Quartz
After years of failed attempts, a research team in Singapore has successfully taught a pair of robots to do something that many humans still can't: build an IKEA chair. The wooden Stefan chair is not the world's first piece of AI-assembled flatpack furniture: Robots at MIT built a simple Lack table in 2013. A chair is more complicated. And while a robot can be programmed to do a single assembly-line task efficiently, mastering all of the small tasks that IKEA assembly requires is a bigger challenge. Some of the same things humans struggle with, like fiddling with bags of screws, dowels, and doodads while trying to distinguish the slight variations in shape, are also difficult for robots. Researchers at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University spent three years programming robots to accomplish the specific tasks necessary to build this particular chair. The next stage will be expanding the machines' intelligence to be able to assemble a chair just by looking at a photograph of the final product Read more

Injured Akshay refuses to leave 'Kesari' sets. What sets him apart from the Khans
Akshay Kumar is one actor who has been constantly starring in socially relevant films for quite a while now. Be it 'Jolly LLB 2' or 'Toilet Ek Prem Katha', he went on to make the audiences rethink on a lot of social issues. And with his latest release 'PadMan' focussing on menstrual hygiene, he went on to garner a positive response from all over. The actor is always ready to go that extra mile for his role. The latest news reports cite that Akshay, who was shooting for his upcoming film 'Kesari' in Wai in Maharashtra's Satara district, went onto injure his ribs while he was shooting the action-heavy climax sequence of the film. Needless to say, he was reportedly advised complete rest but the actor refused to take rest and apparently retired to an accommodation in Wai despite the chopper being available at standby. According to reports, the actor will rest for a while and will then decide on the further schedule of shooting. On the work front, the actor is awaiting the release of 'Gold' and Rajnikanth starrer '2.0'.

FY19 to see modest 1% growth in Cement demand
Domestic cement demand is expected to register a modest growth of around 1% in FY19 on the back of a rebound in cement demand from Q4FY18 as against the earlier expectations in the third quarter, said market experts. The cement off-take has continued to remain weak in the first of FY18 and also in October 2017 because of factors such as weak real estate activity, sand shortage and GST implementation issues. However, if we look at the DIPP data, industry volumes increased by 23% yoy in February 2018. Read more

What if we ended the injustice of bail? | Robin Steinberg
What if we ended the injustice of bail? | Robin Steinberg
On any given night, more than 450,000 people in the United States are locked up in jail simply because they don't have enough money to pay bail. The sums in question are often around $500: easy for some to pay, impossible for others. This has real human consequences -- people lose jobs, homes and lives, and it drives racial disparities in the legal system. Robin Steinberg has a bold idea to change this. In this powerful talk, she outlines the plan for The Bail Project -- an unprecedented national revolving bail fund to fight mass incarceration. Her ambitious plan is one of the first ideas of the Audacious Project, TED's new initiative to inspire global change.
